Headroom, Crest Factor & True Dynamic Range: Defeating the Loudness War

In acoustic and electrical engineering, the Crest Factor is the ratio of peak values to the effective (RMS) value of a waveform:

$$\text{Crest Factor (dB)} = 20 \log_{10}\left(\frac{V_{\text{peak}}}{V_{\text{RMS}}}\right)$$
Crest Factor formula: measures the dynamic punch of transients relative to average loudness

Transients vs Perceived Loudness

A high crest factor (14–18 dB) indicates dynamic, punchy audio with sharp percussion transients (classical music, jazz, acoustic recordings). A low crest factor (6–8 dB) indicates heavily limited, squashed modern commercial masters where transients have been crushed to compete in the "Loudness War".

With streaming platforms enforcing loudness normalization (normalizing tracks to -14 LUFS), over-compressing tracks no longer makes them louder on Spotify—it only makes them sound thinner and less impactful.
