Gain Staging in Digital DAWs: The -18 dBFS Sweet Spot Demystified
In analog mixing consoles, meters were calibrated in VU (Volume Units), where 0 VU = +4 dBu represented the optimal operating level. In digital DAWs, meters are calibrated in dBFS (Decibels Full Scale), where 0 dBFS is the clipping ceiling.
The -18 dBFS Calibration Standard
In professional converter calibration, 0 VU corresponds to -18 dBFS (or -20 dBFS in European broadcasting). Analog-modeled plugins (such as SSL channel strips, Neve EQs, and 1176 compressors) are coded to exhibit their ideal non-linear saturation curve when receiving an input signal averaging around -18 dBFS RMS.
Feeding digital tracks hot (+3 dBFS) into analog-modeled plugins overdrives their internal virtual components into muddy, unmusical distortion.
