16-Bit vs 24-Bit vs 32-Bit Float: Dynamic Range & Quantization Distortion

While sample rate dictates the maximum audio frequency an ADC can record, bit depth (word length) determines the vertical amplitude resolution—how precisely the electrical voltage of the audio waveform is measured at each sampling interval.

$$\text{Dynamic Range (dB)} \approx \text{Bit Depth} \times 6.02 \text{ dB}$$
Theoretical dynamic range relationship: each bit adds approximately 6 dB of dynamic range

Why Modern DAWs Mix in 32-Bit Float

In 24-bit fixed-point systems, exceeding 0 dBFS causes instantaneous digital truncation (clipping). In contrast, 32-bit floating-point audio engines can represent signal levels hundreds of decibels above 0 dBFS without data loss. If an internal mix bus clips, turning down the master fader recovers the entire unclipped waveform cleanly.

Test audio headroom and prevent digital clipping using our Volume Booster & Anti-Clipping Limiter.
